Barcarolle, 2006
Duration: 03:55

Camera: Brian Smith

This short video depicts a performance through song.  In this piece, I lip sync to Jacques Offenbach’s Barcarolle from his opera The Tales of Hoffman.  Projected onto me is a slide of the painting Twins, an oil painting that I created in 2004.  The twins represent a double version of myself as a child, decorated in freckles and curls.  Barcarolle is performed as a duet, and in this piece I take on both voices, shifting from one voice to the next in an underlying rhythm, which is reminiscent of a gondolier's stroke.  The visual layering presented in this piece creates a multitude of characters.  There is physical self, the two painted children, and finally there are the creatures that emerge when myself and the painting become one.
